Journal #3

The field trip and this week's class were really eye opening.  The undergrad to grad to artist-in-a gallery formula is the beaten path, and usually the only option really discussed in school. To see different variations of this model, and ways of working completely outside of this model is really inspiring, because it means that beyond the stories we've heard the past couple of weeks there are other ways of continuing to work that we haven't heard of, but that we could find out about.
It also really emphasized the importance of creating a community of artists around me now, so that once graduation has come and gone I still have people looking at my work.  Rachel's friend said on Friday that once he left undergrad he realized that no one cared about what he was making, but if I have a go-to group now I might not have that problem in the future.

I think my last blog mentioned a drawing project I had in mind, which I've started and have just finished the first one.  Well, actually I did 2 of them before I realized they were too small and had to start over.  But this is the first keeper.  15 hours and 5 minutes.  Whew.  Really counting on that muscle memory to help make the other ones go faster.

O and Dana Schutz is the shit.

Great article on her in AIA this month (this was on the cover, so it makes it kinda lame for me to post this image, but I love the Guston reference, and the impossibility of it) hope we get to do a studio visit with her next semester!
